The Answer No One Will Read

You know who's really making these AI models look smart? Not the engineers. It's people. Actual experts, some of the best in their field, sitting there and writing the perfect answer to a hard question by hand.

And here's the part that stays with me: no one will ever read that answer. It wasn't written for you or me. It was written to grade a machine.

Then they do the harder thing. They read what the model came up with, and they go looking for where it went wrong. Not just the final answer, the whole way it got there, its reasoning, step by step, until they find the exact spot it slipped.

And to do that, you have to be better than the model. Think about that for a second. To catch a frontier AI making a mistake, you need someone who can out-think it in that field. The people keeping these models honest are the ones who could beat them.

So the next time a model gives you an answer and you think, that's impressive, it is. But the impressive part started with a person. Someone sat down, did the hard thinking, wrote the answer nobody would read, and taught the machine what good looks like.

We keep calling the models brilliant. I sit near the people who make them look that way. The brilliance was always human. We just stopped seeing it.
